Through the incredible support of Natasha Hand of Compassion, Voice of Dagoretti CBO had the privilege of carrying out a powerful community outreach in Kawangware.

We engaged in vital mental health discussions, offering a safe space for conversations that matter. We also empowered over 95 young mothers by training them in soap-making and yoghurt-making, giving them sustainable skills to support their families.

In addition, we shared food and sanitary pads with these amazing souls, reminding them that they are seen, heard, and valued.

Empowering young people with practical skills is one of the most impactful ways to build sustainability in community advocacy. We’re proud to be part of this change.

Voices from Kakuma Refugee Camp

Let me tell you a story —a story of struggle, resilience, and hope. Last week, we at Voice of Dagoretti had the opportunity to visit a Kakuma Refugee Camp in Turkana County as part of our ongoing commitment to community advocacy. For many of us, it was our first time in Kakuma, and the experience was deeply eye-opening.

We visited several Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) within the camp — all passionately advocating for the rights and wellbeing of refugees. We also met an amazing group of women artisans creating necklaces, clothes, and school uniforms to support their families and build sustainable livelihoods.

Despite facing immense hardships, refugees from different countries have come together to support each other, creating a community grounded in unity and resilience.

This is the story of people still searching for peace, still holding onto hope.

As community advocates, we left Kakuma inspired and challenged. It’s time for all of us — especially CBOs — to intentionally include refugees in our programs.

No one should be left behind.

On March 15th, Voice of Dagoretti, with the generous support of TICAH (Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health), launched a powerful community engagement initiative to promote Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in the heart of Kawangware Market. together they brought CSE to life through a powerful Magnetic Theatre performance. The interactive show focused on the critical role that parents, guardians, and the wider community play in supporting young people’s right to accurate, age-appropriate, and holistic sexuality education.

The community’s response was overwhelmingly positive. After the performance, many attendees openly shared their perspectives, personal experiences, and voiced their commitment to supporting CSE at the local level. This event marks an important milestone in our ongoing mission to normalize open conversations about sexuality, build community ownership of CSE, and foster environments where young people can grow up informed, confident, and safe.

During our visit to Acts of Children Center, we had the privilege of sharing meals with over 70 children, made possible by the incredible support of our partners and well-wishers. We also donated clothes and shoes to the center to help meet their daily needs. The children’s smiles and laughter reminded us why we do this work and why we must continue.

Through the sessions, we learned how personal stories can be a transformative tool in engaging communities, fostering understanding, and influencing positive change. This experience has equipped us with new skills to strengthen our advocacy and connect more effectively with the people we serve.

Soap and Yogurt Making Lectures

In Dagoretti, there is an unemployment problem. There are a high number of graduates who find it hard to secure work and many young mothers and fathers end up dropping out of school in order to support and take care of their families. As a way of fighting against unemployment and empowering young women, Voice of Dago regularly hosts lectures on Yogurt and Soap Making. We also teach about financial literacy. Our goal with the program is to enable and encourage young people to start their own businesses and focus on self employment to provide for their families. The photos above were taken on October 19th 2023 during a lecture where we trained 35 girls and young mothers on yogurt & soaps making in the Mukuru Slums of Nairobi Kenya.

Mental Health Awareness Advocacy

Many youths residing in informal settlements know little to nothing about mental health despite being the most impacted. Mental health services are often very expensive, making them inaccessible to the youths of  Dagoretti. We conduct monthly mental health discussion meetings where we provide a safe space for young individuals to share and express themselves. The photo above shows our very own youth champions speaking about mental health on the radio in an attempt to raise awareness of the issues of mental health and inaccessibility of treatment.

Feminine Product Drive

Sanitary pads are quite expensive and majority of the girls who live in informal settlements can't afford them, as a way of helping the women of our community, Voice Of Dagoretti hosts a monthly "Wezesha Young Mothers" program. The aim of the event is to provide sanitary pads to the girls and women of our community in need.
